Our horns & materials
Hathorway puts meticulous thought into designs and materials to ensure quality is built to last, and uniqueness that showcases craft & authenticity. Our primary material is ethically-sourced buffalo horn. Let us tell you why we love this material...
A byproduct of waste
Advocating for zero-waste, Hathorway ethically-source buffalo horns that are discarded from the food industry & deadstock in Vietnam. As a sign of respect to the buffalo, nothing of the creature is wasted.
Chemical-Free Process
No chemicals are used and no products are made with a process that pollutes our environment. Using only heat and oil — a Vietnamese craftsmanship that dates back 400 years — the horns are flattened into plates, then cut and polished using water.
An organic material
As an eco-friendly material with high-mineral nitrogen, all our excess horn shavings are produced during the creation of our pieces and are used as soil fertilizer for the rice fields in Vietnam. This provides rice crops to feed people and other buffaloes in Vietnam.
One-of-a-kind Piece
Every horn piece is one-of-a-kind. Each possessing its own exquisite colors and patterns from various shades of lustrous milk, caramel, and charcoal colors in several levels of lucency.

Horn color guide
Our horns come from various cows and buffaloes that are a byproducts of the food and agricultural sector in Vietnam. Because it is an organic material, these horns are beautifully unique for its natural color and pattern variations.
Cream
Our cream and milk-colored horns come with white flecks and snow-color gradiation that almost looks like shell or white agate stone.
Honey
Our honey and tan horns can come in a solid color with different levels of translucency that could resemble caramel candy or warm amber stones. These color horns will come with various white or brown flecks.
Dark
Our dark and black horns can come as solid color or with various white or brown flecks that resembles black onyx stones.

About the designer & brand
Hathorway was founded by former Silicon Valley designer in tech, Jessica Phan. In 2015, Jessica travelled to Vietnam to reconnect with her roots and visit her extended family. It was there she discovered products made of buffalo horns — from chopsticks and spoons to hair combs and jewelry. She began to fall in love with material as she learned more about it the beauty of it. While she loved the material, she found all the jewelry styles distasteful.
Jessica bought a few of them and started to reconstruct them to suit her own unique style. As she wore them, she received several compliments and started selling them on Etsy. This became a hobby. By day she led the design team as head of design for a tech startup in Palo Alto. By night and on weekends she would make earrings and necklaces made of horns to sell to her coworkers, friends, and family.
In February 2018, Jessica left her career in tech to build out Hathorway. This gave her the opportunity to reconnect with her Vietnamese culture while allowing her to pursue her childhood dream in fashion and cavernous, maddening interest in design.
Today she runs Hathorway from her home office in Redwood City, California — doing everything from design, product development, and marketing to e-commerce experiences. With her background in graphic design, many of her inspiration comes from the clean lines and edgy silhouettes of geometric shapes, designed for the metropolitan woman.
Along with Rebecca Minkoff, Rachel Zoe, Aurora James of Brother Vellies, and many other passionate women, Jessica became a part of the Female Founder Collective as of March 2019.

The Artisans of the Horn Craft Village
Just outside of Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, resides several villages historically known for their artisanal crafts. One village in particular, Thuy Ung, has been known for making handcrafted goods from horns for over 400 years. As you walk down the road and peek through the houses, there are piles of horn tubes in the front yards waiting to be turned into salad forks, spoons, bowls, combs, and jewelry. These horn tubes are not only from buffaloes in Vietnam, but are also imported from Laos, Cambodia, and various countries in Africa.
Hathorway has proudly teamed up with one artisan family from Thuy Ung to create our very own horn jewelry. The family works from the comfort of their own home, which gives them the flexibility to manage their own time and activities, such as raising kids, cooking dinner, and managing household errands. When the family gets busy, they can easily call for help to other artisans in their village.

Jewelry Care
At Hathorway, we selected horn as our primary material to create our jewelry and accessories, because they possess the most gorgeous textures and patterns, as well they are eco-friendly and naturally sustainable for our planet. Similarly to our very own skin, nails and hair, your horn jewelry do need a bit of care because they are organic:
- Dab a small amount of pure jojoba oil (a organic botanical extract of the seed of the jojoba tree) on a soft cloth. The jojoba oil will enhance your horn color and will add a bit of shine back to your horn jewelry. As well, it will hide any scratches or imperfection.
- Polish your horn jewelry in a circular motion with your soft cloth and wipe clean.
- When not being worn, store your horn jewelry in a cloth bag to avoid exposure to excessive moisture or sunlight.
